Is Autism a Superpower? Sometimes yes.  It’s very cool to feel the joy of a new special interest. Sometimes… it’s just not. When the lights are too loud and the sounds are deafening.

Internalized ableism occurs when disabled people adopt negative beliefs and stereotypes about disability, leading to feelings of distress, shame and alienation both from the abled community and the disabled community.

People with Autism are often found to have spiky profiles. They may have amazing verbal communication but may need significant support in executive functioning and nonverbal communication. The levels classification has largely fallen out of favour in the Autism community, because it does not reflect these spiky profiles

Symptoms of Autistic burnout can include a loss of skills, exhaustion and reduced tolerance to sensory inputs, lasting more than 3 months.

The medical model was centered on the belief that the best way to help people who were disabled was to focus on the changes the individual could make to “improve” their life. The social model of disability says that disability actually comes from society itself

Many people are challenged by the idea of self diagnosis. Autism/ADHD/AudHD diagnosed by a psychiatrist, or a doctor or a psychologist is somehow more “real”, at least to some people.

Invisible or hidden disabilities are conditions that impact something called Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), but are not visible to others.

Person First vs. Identity First Language. For many Autistic people they feel that their Autism is a core part of who they are.

What is late diagnosis? Late diagnosis occurs when an Autistic person is identified after the age of 18.
